  • Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is an immerging inter-disciplinary field of research including Information Technology and Biology. It was a coincidence that I started working in this feild. Though biology was one of my favorite subjects during higher secondary studies, I was very much scared of the zoology laboratory. Because of this, I opted for physics rather than life science during graduation. And in course of time, I choose my carrier in computer science and was carrying out research in wireless sensor networks. During my M.Tech course in Tezpur University, Dr. S.K. Ray introduced Bioinformatics to me. In an informal get-together in his residence he proposed to develop a program to search nucleotide sequences in a DNA sequence. We used that program to publish few research articles in Current Science. After I joined Tezpur University as a faculty, I got further opportunity to do computational analysis of DNA sequence with Dr. B. R. Powdel. There is a plenty of research scope for computer scientist in this feild years to come.

  • Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless Sensor Networks are being used for reliable environment monitoring in both civil and military applications. In our daily life, we often come across situations where we need to collect information from some inaccessible environments. For such types of applications, a huge number of low cost, low power consuming nodes, capable of forming an ad hoc network among them are used. Computer scientists are involved in addressing issues like Energy efficiency in data gathering, coverage hole, security threats etc. in wireless sensor network.
